    PESFan PES 2010 Q&A Part 2

    Posted by pes-patch On August - 26 - 2009

    qo8wsn PESFan PES 2010 Q&A Part 2

Are any Championship teams in ML? What about other licenses?

No, there are no Championship teams in at this stage. Ligue 1, Serie A and Eredivisie are all fully licensed, with La Liga partially licensed with 10 teams and Liverpool and Man Utd licensed in England’s top division.

    How many team’s in D-2?

18, and these can be replaced with edited teams from ‘OTHER B’ to create a custom second division.

Can I still change the teams in the top divisions?

Yes you can. For example you could swap out Liverpool for Celtic or Inter Milan for Team F if you so wished

What ‘Other Teams’ are in Div 2 of ML.

At the moment? Made up ones, and there no telling if this will change. They have a variety of European sounding names like Wondengine Town and FC Nortovka.

How many teams in the CL? Is it 32 teams in 8 groups of 4 like real life

Yes, the tournament follows the same standards as it does in the real world, same goes for Europa League. The only difference is that obviously the entire playoff rounds aren’t included, although some teams such as North London have to play the round two playoff to qualify for the CL group stages as they finished 4th last season.

Do you get new youth players at the start of a new season

The entire youth team won’t change, but the players who have grown too old and not been snapped up by you on a professional contract will be replaced by other re-gens.

Does ML keep any more stats of players (goals scored, etc)?

It keeps track of best eleven, European footballer of the year and international caps stats, as well as goals scored/games played etc.

Do these stats only start from when you play ML?

Yes, stats from previous seasons do not count towards a player’s stats, although they do accumulate the further you go in ML.

Has stamina changed so players can player more often without getting tired?

Yes, the greater the quality of your Athletic Trainer combined with the player’s “Form” determine how tired they get and how much is accumulates.

Are South American sides or WE/PES United teams included in ML or the European competitions?

No, these teams don’t appear (unless of course the teams are edited into D2 and progress to finish high enough in the D1 league to qualify).

Will Europa League and Champions League end up on PC?

Both tournaments are currently set to be included on the PC [it is at time of writing].

When do you pay your player’s/club staff wages?

The first week in September, although if you buy a player in January you pay half their wages up front.

If I use default players in ML will they be the same as the youth team?

I couldn’t tell you, but I’d imagine the youth team players will be altered before the final version for this reason.

How many players can you negotiate with at once?

I seemed to be able to negotiate with 5 players at a time.

Will Become a Legend mode return in PES2010?

Yes, Be a Legend is confirmed and present.

Can you play as a defender/goalkeeper?

It doesn’t seem like it, the positions you could play in BAL seem to be the same as in 2009.

Are there different types of nets in different stadiums?

On the PC version I’m currently testing the nets appear to be the same

Can you edit nationalities of current player in edit mode?

No, nationalities don’t seem to be editable in PES2010

How many cards can each player have?

Players can have a maximum of 11 cards.

Can you tell me anything about the Community mode hinted at?

Not too much yet, no, as this isn’t something which is playable in this version.

However in the Cup mode you can select Community as a cup, which has the description “The beauty of Community is its diversity. Add friends and play competitions of all sorts, and keep the match records which can be compared to see just who comes out on top! Make your Community the social hub where friends and football freaks alike come together!

Make of this what you will.

How many players can be in a Community?

In the Community Mode there’s the option to add 32 participants, whether this will relate directly to the finished product or not I don’t know.

What stats does Community seem to keep?

It appears to keep stats on average goals per match/goals conceded/average fouls/assists/yellow cards/red cards/shots off and on target/possession for every player.

     PES2010 Hands On from PESFan.com

Tell you what Jon, it’s that time of the year again. Yup, Konami have released the latest code of PES2010 to the press, and here at the bright lights of PESFan towers we’ve managed to get our grubby little mitts on it for your benefit. Oh happy days. As always when trying a new build of PES for the first time, I headed straight for Exhibition mode. What better way to test the ins and outs of a new code than by reliving that most classic of world football matches – West Midlands Village vs. East London. The first thing that struck me about the game was just how hard it was to run with the ball now. Granted, every time I play a new version of PES there’s always that little adjustment period, but I was completely beyond all redemption. Every time I tried to dribble around a player I came unstuck, it seemed almost impossible. Even faster members of the squad like Ashley Young could only run a finite amount before being thwarted by a member of the Hammers defence. Before I knew it, I was a goal down inside 10 minutes. What on earth was I doing wrong? Several games later – it hit me. I was playing PES like I always had. A general rule of thumb I’d previously employed was a few long passes to a member of my team on the wings, sprint for a while, cut in and shoot. Probably about three or four passes in total from receiving the ball. This sort of thinking failed me utterly in PES2010. As soon as I realised what I was doing wrong and started to actually pass the ball around, the game opened itself up to me. It felt more realistic, goals actually took…effort. There was no bolting around seven men and planting the ball easily in the corner of the net, these were worked build ups and felt genuinely satisfying.

Mind you, I was hardly playing with world-beaters (Steve Sidwell excluded), so next on the agenda was Barcelona vs. Manchester United. As you would expect with a higher quality team, it was easier, but the dynamics were still the same. Even Messi wasn’t able to just buzz past players like he was some sort of mutant fly. One of the reasons for this is that changing direction at speed is no longer painfully easy. The new turning animations ensure that the pace of the game slows down when trying to dodge past a defender, and although this movement feels unnatural and weird at first, when it clicks – it really clicks. It’s something I ended up missing when going back to an earlier version of PES. Although you can still gradually change your direction while running with the ball, 2010 made me want to cut down on the easy ninety-degree turns I’d got so accustomed to, instead opting to pass. The AI also seems to play a part, with both your team and the opposition providing much sterner challenges to work around. From personal experience, it felt the AI was far more competent at covering gaps in its defence, and would eagerly close me down at the earliest point. Goalkeepers too seem to be more skilled, and in my opinion managed to position themselves and cover goal much more successfully than before. There was still the occasional unwelcome spill or unnaturally acrobatic mega-save, but overall I felt they were a definite advancement. The new Cards and Team Style systems are an interesting addition, and I found combining them both results in quite a variety of games panning out. The changes are subtle, but they are there, and I’ll be curious to see how people use them differently as time goes on. One point of note was that I could only find twenty-one different cards (with two even being allocated for goalkeepers), but I should mention this was only by investigation of Master League at the start of the game, so don’t quote me on it.

Penalties are another area in which Konami has tweaked for 2010, with the idea being that how you take a pen now lies in a) how much power you give the ball and b) which direction and how much or how little you point the analogue stick. However as of writing this the system seems to be either too sensitive, resulting in penalty after penalty being blasted miles high and wide, or not quite finished yet. Out of about twenty penalties taken I only managed to score two using the new system, although this may just be down to my lack of skill. I actually found it was a more successful tactic to press no buttons at all, as after a time the computer automatically takes one for you and usually scores with a minimal of fuss. The animations show real promise at this stage, and are already a step above previous instalments. Even with a fair percentage of them yet to be included, they still look fantastic, smooth and as genuine as I’ve seen in a PES game. Injured players even hobble around the pitch when they aren’t being called into action. I regret to inform I’m not able to comment on the game’s new 360 degree movement control, as this is a feature that has apparently been left out of the Xbox version’s design due to ‘technical limitations of the hardware’. We are informed that this feature will be available on the Playstation 3, but it seems odd that Konami have left out any increase in running directions at all for Microsoft’s console. It would have been nice if there were now even, say, sixty angles instead of sixteen, but there you go. Perhaps It’s something the makers are looking into for the near-future. It’s worth mentioning that the overall presentation is a big step-up, even in this preview build. The early lighting effects look brilliant, the menus feel slick and player faces have seen a ridiculous level of improvement. Having said that, some lesser known players from smaller clubs can still resemble beings from an alien world, but for the most part even they looked more like their real-life counterparts than in 2009. I think it’s safe to assume the player faces are still a work in progress, you can tell that a lot of the teams in the game haven’t been properly dealt with yet, so hopefully it’s still on the to-do list of Konami’s efforts.

    727yjd PES2010 Hands On from PESFan.com

Areas of the audio have also been tweaked. It was great hearing my fans jeer the visiting team if they had too much possession of the ball. Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson return to their seats as commentator and co-commentator respectively, with Lawro continuing in his tradition of making sarcastic comments at me when I’m at my lowest. The overall commentary doesn’t seem noticeably different at this point, but it’s difficult to say at what stage in 2010’s development any new lines would be included. Master League on the other hand has evolved considerably and now includes proper team budgets, coaches, athletic trainers scouts, youth teams and more. You can change the way the league is organised; do you want it to be structured by goal difference after points or head-to-head results? It’s up to you. There are some interesting improvements, and I’ll be discussing these in much more detail in a special Master League report tomorrow. Unfortunately the much maligned Become A Legend has not seen a similar overhaul. Apart from the general gameplay improvements implemented in PES2010, the mode itself hasn’t changed noticeably, which I found a bit troubling. I can only hope that BAL is scheduled to be upgraded closer to release date, because in my opinion it’s something that showed a lot of potential when it debuted in 2009. Overall, I think 2010 is showing a lot of promise. but is PES2010 a return to form? Personally I think it could be. On the other hand, in the same way beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, playability is in the eyes of the player. But for by money, it already presents a good, solid game of football, with only minor glitches preventing it from being the best I’ve played in a long, long time. With Konami really under the spotlight to make this year’s PES the best ever, I’ve no doubt most of these will be ironed out in the coming weeks.

Extended PES 2010 Preview From PSM3

    Posted by pes-patch On July - 11 - 2009

    1569v Extended PES 2010 Preview From PSM3

    2569s Extended PES 2010 Preview From PSM3

Slower. More painstaking. Less goals. That’s how PES 2010 hopes to steal the critical high ground from EA’s FIFA 10. Sounds unlikely? It’ll make sense when you read our exclusive PES 2010 hands-on, plus exclusive development team interview, in PSM3#116 on-sale now for £4.99 at all good newsagents – but we’ve been holding some juicy information back. Until now…

There’s ten pages of revealing Pro Evo 2010 hands-on insight in the mag, but we still had to cut out some interesting, if niche, new details; including player stats, menu options and data, that – as gently obsessive fans – make us oddly excited. Click to read more…

The following are offcuts from our notebook that didn’t make the magazine, partly because they’re a little too hardcore for less committed Pro Evo players, partly because we ran out of space. Here goes…

    PES 2010 Menu Options
The code we played was a controlled, two-team, demo, with only Exhibition matches active, but the main menu currently contains the following blanked out options:

    • UEFA Champions League
    • Exhibition
    • Master League
    • Become A Legend
    • League/Cup
    • Community
    • Online
    • Training
    • Edit
    • Gallery
    • System Settings
    • Exit

The menu screens are – we must stress – placeholder, but the main menu options are currently arranged in a circle (a bit like the outline of a ball, as recall it). The overall visual style resembles a match ticket, or match day programme – relaying a real ‘fan’ feel.

    Music
Currently, there’s no licensed music, but lots of generic menu tunes in classic PES style, from genres such as House, Techno, New Rave and Indie. One track was literally labelled New-Rave, Tech Funk.
When we asked Konami Japan how the music would change, they simply replied ‘There will be more variety’.

Edit Player Position – bias arrows
When you edit a player’s position, we couldn’t find the traditional eight way arrows (where you can highlight two of eight directions as the player’s preferred areas of movement). Perhaps this has been removed so the tactical sliders (see the magazine) are more powerful. They were pretty obscure/confusing for the mass market, so that might be another reason for their removal. This is only our speculation, mind you, so don’t be shocked if the arrows return – we just couldn’t find them in the current code.

    Player stats are position-specific
PES 2010 features an accurately rendered version of Liverpool’s home stadium Anfield. Note the new 3D crowds.
All players have a ‘top line’ stat, just like FIFA, so, say, Gerrard has an overall score of 96, Torres 80, Agger 74 etc. Don’t worry – the traditional stats for individual attributes like short pass acc, dribbling, balance etc are still visible, but the ‘top line’ stat makes it easier for newcomers to judge their best players.

When you move a player into an unfamiliar position, their stats will be adjusted accordingly. e.g. Benayoun is 78 AMF, 63 CMF and 47 DMF – which makes sense, since this smaller, skillful player would be better deployed ‘in the hole’ up front, and not as a holding player in deep midfield. Utility players like Gerrard suffer much less when moved out of their prefered position, making squad utility players even more important to cover for key injuries.

    Man Marking
When you set a player to man mark the opposition, you can compare their top line stats and – handily – height, so you don’t put a tiny defender up against a huge forward by mistake. You can also toggle between Loose/Tight marking.

    Match menus
As it stands, and this may change, the in-game Pause menu has the same options as PES 2009. It’s the same at half-time, too, with familiar Match Details and Highlights options.

    Player celebrations
There are more player-specific goal celebrations, the most memorable we saw being Torres’ thumb sucking motion.

    Streamlined VS matches
When you go into a game and choose VS. Player (i.e. two-player), you no longer need to move the pads either side of the screen like in PES 2009 – the game assumes you want a two-player match and goes straight to the ‘Kick Off’ menu. Don’t worry – you can still manually adjust the pads for two-player co-op matches in the Pause menu. It’s simply a more intuitive way to enter a quick two-player VS match.

There’s a VS.Com option for going straight into Human vs CPU games.

There’s a Custom option for multi-player matches, with two or more human players.

    The Exhibition menu
    Has six options:

    • Team Select
    • Stadium
    • Kick Off!
    • Game Plan (i.e. where you adjust tactics, players etc)
    • Uniform
    • Options

    Condition Arrows
Are the same as ever. Five arrows, from Excellent (Red), to Normal (Green) and Terrible (a dull purple/grey colour).

    The Game Plan menu
It’s the equivalent of the old formations/tactics menu, with the following options:

    • Match Start
    • Assist Setting
    • Change Player
    • Set Formation
    • Tactics
    • Setplay Settings
    • Data Management

We’ll go through the new menus, and changes, one by one:
    Assist Setting
Contains simple sliders where you can adjust broad brush issues, such as

Change Player (0, 1, 2, 3) – which allows you to automatically choose your formation based on Ability/Balanced/Condition, or None (0). It’s like the old auto-select feature, but easier to understand. The option to ‘Balance’ your team is new, and the computer will pick the best team allowing for player ability *and* condition e.g. it might still pick Gerrard, even if he’s on a slightly downward sloping condition arrow, since he is still a key player, but would not pick a less important player, like Kuyt, if his condition was poor – as it says, it’s all about balance.

Change Formation (0, 1, 2, 3) – Set your team to play broadly Centre Attack, Side Attack or None.

    Auto-form change (On/Off)

Change Game Plan (0, 1, 2, 3) – None (0), Normal type (1), Balanced (2) or (3) Special type. This affects the way you change tactics ‘on the fly’ in-game, but we didn’t experiment with it. You can still assign mid-match strategy changes to L2 and combinations of square, circle etc etc

    Auto Tactics (0, 1, 2, 3)

    Change Player
    Players are colour coded…
    Brown – GK
    Blue – Defence
    Green – Midfield
    Red – Attack

You can see a player’s preferred foot via an on-screen outline of their feet, plus there’s a little visual representation of their height – a generic body outline next to a ‘ruler’ e.g. 188cm

Players have an overall ‘top line’ rating to reflect their ability, just like FIFA – which makes it easier when comparing players head-to-head. Don’t worry – the normal individual stats still exist, but the ‘top line’ score is just a quick visual indicator.

Here are some example scores from the Liverpool team in early PES 2010 code:

    • Reina 73
    • Hypia 81
    • Agger 74
    • Skrtel 71
    • Carragher 71
    • Gerrard 96
    • Alonso 78
    • Kuyt 77
    • Riera 81
    • Benayoun 78
    • Torres 80
    • Mascherano 88
    • N’Gog 59

It’s worth noting that this ‘top line’ score changes if you play someone out of position, for example Hypia’s score of 81 plummets if you play him as CF.

How is the ‘top line’ score worked out?
There’s no official word from Japan, but we’ll perform an experiment by taking Gerrard’s individual stats, and taking an average.

If you add these up, and divide by the number of attributes 1840/22 = 83.6

So since Gerrard’s actual score is 96, this number can’t be a pure average, but must take into account other stats that aren’t measured as 1-100. e.g. Aggression, Mentality, Team Work, Condition, Weak Foot Accuracy, Weak Foot Frequency etc

More importantly, the ‘top line’ score must take into account a player’s unique abilities, previously know as ability stars, but now known as the ‘Ability Card’ system.

    Set Formation
    This menu contains the options:
    Edit Position
    Change Formation
    Mark Settings
    CARD

    There’s a host of default formations, as usual, including 4312, 4213, 442, 4411, 451, 4123 etc

CARD – this option allows you to toggle card abilities on/off. Once again, see PSM3#116 for a detailed explanation.

The effect of each card is demonstrated by the player’s movement (represented by moving dots) on the overhead tactics pitch view above the lower menu. For example, you can see the Torres’ dot move to break the defensive line when you activate the Goal Poacher dot.

    Tactics
There’s a lot more on this in PSM3#116, with detailed analysis of the tactics sliders, so we’ll focus on what we had to leave out.

    Strategy
You can still manually assign ‘on the fly’ tactics changes to the shoulder/face buttons e.g. press L2 and circle to perform a counter attack/pressure/CB Overlap/Offside Trap etc, depending on what buttons you assign.

    Setplay Settings
The options are the same as usual, but they’re listed in a long vertical list to make it easier to see who’s assigned to what duty.

    Camera Types
From what we’ve seen, they’re the same as ever, and we played in classic ‘Wide’ view.
